Maintain daily brushing/flossing, use fluoride toothpaste, and get regular dental cleanings. If pregnant, talk with your obstetrician and dentist about periodontal care and avoid smoking.

Evidence shows an association between periodontal disease and higher risk of preterm birth and low birth weight, based on observational studies and some meta-analyses. Causality isn’t proven; confounding factors may play a role. Intervention trials haven’t consistently shown that periodontal treatment during pregnancy reduces these outcomes. Maintaining good oral health before and during pregnancy is reasonable; discuss safe dental care with your obstetrician and dentist, and manage risk factors.
