In my practice, adding a quick sleep screen and clear referral path helped patients open up and get timely sleep specialist care.

Clinicians don’t have to become sleep techs to screen effectively; the goal is a practical, evidence-informed approach. Start with basics: a short training module on common sleep issues (insomnia, sleep apnea, circadian rhythm problems), plus hands-on use of validated screens like the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, STOP-BANG for OSA risk, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Learn how to take a focused sleep history, duration, timing, awakenings, naps, daytime symptoms, and how to interpret red flags that require urgent referral (severe snoring with witnessed apneas, extreme daytime sleepiness, unsafe driving). Training should cover triage and referral pathways, when to order home sleep apnea testing or actigraphy, and how to document findings in the EMR. Ongoing CME and interdisciplinary collaboration boost competence and confidence.
